"The shark will tear that thing to pieces"...."YOU GOT ANY BETTER SUGGESTIONS"??
In 1975's Jaws, there is a scene where they have to put together a shark cage, to place in the water so Hooper can kill the shark with a poisonous dart. Putting together a cage, takes a lot of patience and time, and would bore an audience to death. However with different angles, cuts, and positions the actor switch to, the audience is shown that there has been a lot of time passed, even though it only lasts 7 seconds.
ROCKY-
Probably one of the most famous montage scenes, is when Rocky is in "training". People know that getting into shape, and gaining muscle takes many months. However, the way the camera cuts to Rocky doing different exercises from jogging, punching bags, jump rope, pushups, situps, what would be many months of training was made into a minute montage which gives the audience the idea that he's been working hard for quite awhile and has gained a lot out of it.
BATMAN BEGINS-
Bruce Wayne finally discovers the giant cave that he has feared for so long under his house. With his new purpose of living as a symbol of Gotham that will not let evil prevail, he needs to make some sort of headquarters where his "batman" identity can live. Everyone knows that redoing a bathroom or a kitchen can be a hassle and take quite some time. So the audience can certainly get the idea of how long it takes to turn a vacant cave into a full powered, gadget/vehicle holding hideout. The scene of building takes about 2 minutes on film, which is the perfect time for the audience to understand that a lot of time and work went into it.
